Programme overview

The Thinking Writer: A Composition Programme Built for PSLE and Beyond

Writing a good composition is not simply about having a vivid imagination. It requires structure, planning, vocabulary, and the ability to respond purposefully to a prompt — all within exam conditions.

Our Thinking Writer programme teaches primary school students to do exactly that. From story structure and plot development to grammar, vocabulary, and situational writing formats, every lesson builds a skill that shows up directly in your child's marks.

The programme is aligned to the MOE Primary English syllabus and covers all writing components tested in school examinations and the PSLE English paper — including continuous writing (creative composition) and situational writing.

How the programme builds

What your child learns, level by level

1

P4 — Foundations of Good Writing

Students learn the building blocks of composition: story structure, paragraph organisation, character development, and descriptive language. We introduce techniques such as the use of vivid imagery, foreshadowing, and sensory detail — in a way that feels natural rather than formulaic.

2

P5 — Writing With Purpose and Precision

Students refine their ability to plan and execute a composition in response to picture or text prompts. Lessons focus on plot coherence, pacing, and the consistent use of good phrases — developed through practice, not rote memorisation.

3

P6 & PSLE Preparation

Students practise writing full compositions under timed conditions, covering the most commonly tested PSLE composition themes. We analyse past PSLE English writing questions, review examiner expectations, and address the most frequent mistakes that cost students marks.

Why Joyous Learning

Why Parents Choose Joyous Learning for Composition Writing

✦

Ex-MOE English teachers who understand PSLE writing inside out

Every tutor in our Thinking Writer programme is a former MOE English teacher. They know how PSLE compositions are marked, what examiners reward, and — crucially — what separates a good composition from a forgettable one.

✦

A structured, step-by-step approach to storytelling

We do not tell students to "be creative" and hope for the best. We teach a clear, replicable process — how to interpret a prompt, plan a story arc, develop tension, and land a satisfying conclusion — so students can execute well under any exam condition.

✦

Techniques taught in context, not memorised in isolation

Rather than handing students a list of phrases to memorise, we teach them how good writing works — and let strong vocabulary and expression develop naturally through regular, guided practice. Students internalise the language because they understand why it works.

✦

Full coverage of both continuous and situational writing

Our programme addresses both PSLE English writing components. Students learn the conventions of each situational writing format — formal letters, informal emails, reports, speeches — alongside the storytelling techniques required for continuous writing.

✦

Personalised feedback on every composition

Each student receives written, individualised feedback on their compositions — not just a score. They understand specifically what worked, what did not, and what to focus on in their next piece.

✦

Small classes of up to nine students

With a maximum of nine students per class, our teachers have the time and capacity to read and respond meaningfully to every student's writing. No generic comments. No one slipping through the cracks.

✦

Regular timed practice under exam-like conditions

Students write compositions within PSLE time constraints so that exam conditions feel familiar, not frightening, when the actual paper arrives.
